Carmichael

Three matches have been found in the SMGF database with the surname Carmichael. These individuals do not match Carmichael men in other databases such as FTDNA or Ysearch. They all connect to the same ancestor:

Duncan CARMICHAEL
Born abt.1729 Stokes County, North Carolina, USA
Died abt.1783 Halifax County, North Carolina, USA

Marr – Sarah ENSLEY   
Born abt.1733 Stokes County, North Carolina, USA
Died abt.1783 Halifax County, North Carolina, USA

According to George F. Black in his ‘Surnames of Scotland’, in the highlands Carmichael was a ‘translation’ or equivalent of MacGillmichael (MacMichael) meaning ‘son  of the servant of  Saint Michael’. The surname was at one time common on the Island of Lismore in Loch Linnhe, the McIlmichells of Lismore and Appin having changed their name to Carmichael.
